Student Development Course for Pre-Health Students

STDEV 170: Introduction to Health Professions (1 credit, Fall, Winter, Spring-Summer)
Overview of health professions: medical, dental, and many allied health professions. Primary focus on guest lectures from various practitioners and clinicians.

STDEV 271: Preview of Dentistry (1 credit, Fall, Winter)
Introduction to dental practice with lectures by dentists. An overview of the required courses, the application process, and recommended extracurricular opportunities. Representatives from professional schools also give presentations.

STDEV 272: Preview of Medicine (1 credit, Fall, Winter)
Introduction to medical practice with lectures by doctors. An overview of the required courses, the application process, and recommended extracurricular opportunities. Representatives from professional schools also give presentations.

STDEV 273: Preview of Optometry (1 credit, Fall)
Introduction to optometry practice with lectures by optometrists. An overview of the required courses, the application process, and recommended extracurricular opportunities. Representatives from professional schools also give presentations.

STDEV 278: Preview of Physician Assistant (1 credit, Winter)
This course is designed to give the student greater insights and understanding into the field of Physician Assistants (PA) and the application process to PA school. Practicing PAs and PA school administrators will regularly present as guest speakers.

STDEV 305: Adv Reading Strategies For College Success (2 credits, Fall, Winter)
This course teaches speed comprehension and reading strategies for all different kinds of texts from science textbooks to poetry. This is an excellent course for those planning on any kind of graduate school program to prepare them to absorb the large amount of information they will be required to read and retain in graduate school.

STDEV 375: Dental School Preparation, Lab Experience (2 credits, Fall, Winter)
This class gives students practical experience in the areas of dental anatomy, terminology, tooth carving, and dental operating techniques. It is a two-credit-hour graded course. The instructor is a local dentist. Prerequisites: STDEV 271.

STDEV 399R: Health Professions Internship (1-3 credits, Fall, Winter, Spring)
This class gives credit for internships completed with healthcare providers. Students must find their own healthcare provider to shadow for this internship. Internships can be from 1 to 3 credits with 1 credit requiring 42 hours of experience.
