How to Request a Letter of Recommendation (Reapplicants)

Letter Tracker is a service designed to help students submit letters of recommendation into their medical and dental applications. The process of using letter tracker starts by requesting letters of recommendation from your letter writers. The steps for this process can be found below.

1. Create your account / Logging in
2. Make a letter request on Letter Tracker
3. Waive your rights to the letters
4. Request more letters
5. Submit your application

Once you are finished requesting and receiving letters of recommendation, you can send them to your application through a letter packet. More information and tutorials can be found HERE.

1. Create your account / Logging in

a. Go to https://ppalettertracker.byu.edu. Once there, select "Yes, login" when asked if you have a BYU netID. "No, continue" is used for letter writers not associated with BYU.

b. Enter an email address that you access frequently. We will use this email address to contact you if there are any issues with your letters of recommendation, or with your letter packet. Then select if you are applying to Medical or Dental School.

2. Make a letter request on Letter Tracker

*Before creating a request on letter tracker, be sure you ask your letter writers prior. It is wise to give those willing to write you a letter of recommendation a desired date of completion at least 2 weeks after the request is made, and 2 weeks before you plan to submit your first secondary application.

a. Make sure you are on the "Letters" tab at the top of the screen. Then, select "Request a letter."

b. Enter your letter writers information and click "Submit." Your request is not yet finished, clicking submit will take you to the next and final step of requesting a letter packet.

3. Waive your rights to the letters

a. You will have the option to waive your rights to your letters. It is highly recommended that YES, you do waive your rights to the letter. Waiving your rights will let schools know you do not intend to read the letter of recommendation written for you. Waiving your rights suggests to schools that the letter has not been written with any bias, and will be read with full credibility.

Hitting submit on this page will generate an email to your letter writer. Click HERE to view a sample email your letter writers will receive. Because the email is sent from a server, it may end up in the junk/spam folder. Encourage letter writers to check this folder if they are having trouble receiving the request.

4. Request more letters

Continue to request as many letters as desired. You can send a maximum of 4-6 letters in your letter packet, but you can create an unlimited amount of letter requests. Once you have received ALL letters you want sent through letter tracker, you can request a letter packet. See the "How to request a letter packet tutorial" from THIS page.

Check the status of your letters. You can see each of the successful requests you have made, as well as other necessary receiving information. Please visit this page to see if your letters have been uploaded.

5. Submit your application

While you are still requesting letters of recommendation, you can (and should) submit your application once it is finished! With rolling admissions, it is important to have your application submitted as soon as possible. Your letters do not need to be submitted at the time you submit your primary application. Your letters will only be read by the school once you have submitted your secondary application. For more information, see the FAQ page and how to request a letter packet tutorial.

If you have further questions about requesting a letter, visit the FAQ page or speak with the letter secretary. All information can be found at THIS webpage.
